This week I spent some time with a number of colleagues singing Christmas carols, and spreading holiday good wishes to residents in local area nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and senior centers.  What a wonderful day it was.  The event is called H.U.G.S.  Hartford Underwriters Give Smiles.

I’ve been doing this now for about ten years.  It is a great time to take a step back from the day to day business of meeting with people and talking about things people would rather not talk about, and see the results of the work that I and so many others do that make a real difference for people.  At this time of year it’s wonderful to recognize once again that even the most simple thing, like holding someone’s hand, can make such a difference in someone’s life.

The HUGS Tour is now more than an annual event that brings industry people together to do something great for the community.  It has become a integral way for me and others to feel grateful for the work we do, and for the blessings we all have in our lives beyond the material things our business can provide.  It’s about the relationships we have, and how we all can do things to perpetuate what is most important.

Gratitude.  It’s a gift.
