Next, families should explore the various options available for long-term care. This involves addressing a pair of closely-related questions: What options are available for providing long term health care? and Where will the money come from to pay for these services?

- Government. What kinds of federal and state governmental assistance are currently available for long term care? What are the requirements of qualify? What are the repercussions of taking advantage of them?
- Insurance. What provisions have you already taken for long-term care insurance? What programs are available? How much would a long term care insurance program cost that would protect the family in case long term care was needed? How much would it cost to maintain the family’s standard of living, and the integrity of the estate, if care was needed?
